Covering Up Problem Baseboards With CoverTrim

After Renu Multifamily Services earned the contract to fully renovate 60 apartments in Spring Valley, Calif., they encountered a problem. Asbestos in the drywall meant they could not disturb the baseboard mouldings. The solution? Go over the existing mouldings with CoverTrim.

“Every room in each apartment needed new base moulding to help upgrade the units,” says Pete Foster, project manager with Renu Multifamily Services. “We’re fortunate that our estimators and purchasing people were able to find CoverTrim. Instead of ripping out and replacing the old baseboards, we simply slid the CoverTrim over the top of the older baseboards. Then we nailed it in place and kept on going. It was exactly what we needed for this job.”

Time-Saving Solution

Made of durable medium-density fiberboard (MDF), CoverTrim from Ornamental Decorative Millwork comes primed and ready to paint. Available transition blocks and spacers make it easy to quickly gain new mouldings throughout a home, multi-family or commercial project.

Whether existing baseboards are scuffed up, dented or damaged, it doesn’t matter. CoverTrim, which recently won the 2021 Golden Hammer Award for innovative new products, hides everything.

For the Spring Valley Apartments project, Foster and his team installed CoverTrim in the Colonial style in the entryways, dining rooms, bedrooms and family rooms of all 60 apartments.

“I think this is a fantastic, time-saving product,” says Foster. “It was the perfect application and we’ll be using it again on other jobs in the future. This product really fills a need in the marketplace. I’d recommend it to other contractors.”

Product Specifics

Each piece of CoverTrim is 5-1/4” high. The Craftsman- and Colonial-style base mouldings are 7/8” in depth. Adhesive-backed spacers act as a buffer between the face of the old moulding and CoverTrim, when existing base moulding is less than 9/16” thick. Placed every six inches, the 1/8” spacers come in packs of 50. Ornamental also offers a Colonial-style crown moulding CoverTrim with a depth of 5/8”.

Available nationwide through The Home Depot and Wayfair, CoverTrim products are Made in America. Finishing nails should be used to install CoverTrim mouldings.
